I don't actually agree with either standpoint myself (2 is an 8 for me, 3 is a 9) but that's how the community seems to view it.

Either a frustratingly low point for the series or an amazing high point for it depending on what you value (personal taste on certain points, pvp vs. DS2 is more often a 5-6 or a 9-10, ending up at about the same average. A good or great Souls game that's usually considered to fall short of being incredible due to lack of originality. To put it another way DS3 is a 7 or 8 for most people. It is a shorter, smaller but much more polished game as a result and is closer to the original game in its stylistic choices. 3 is Safe Souls, trying very little new and often outright neglecting to carry over changes made from 1 to 2. 2 was creative, ambitious and rich with content but had a serious amount of implementation problems in the base game, likely largely because the team and its directors were less experienced.
This fits with how each game was designed. 3 has less of both groups fewer major detractors but also fewer major defenders. 2 has a lot of people who really adore it, but also a pretty large number who don't like it very much. They differ in how they reach that average. Arguably also less favorable than Demon's but this comparison is a bit shakier since that game is probably the least played by far as a result of being both the oldest and single-platform. On average both are rated about the same, which is to say, less favorably than BB or DS1 which are the most popular.

Q: what are the diferences between both versionsĪ: the whole list is a little long, but TL:DR sligly better graphics, new enemies and diferent tresure and enemies placements, and unlike the vanilla version you don't get the keys for DLC right away, rather, you will have to explore a bit to gain the right to enter the DLC zones.
